The Person Centred Approach

The Person Centred Approach was founded by Dr Carl Rogers, and it is one of the most widely used Humanistic Therapies within the field of counselling. It is based in a philosophy about people and human relationships, and we believe it is fundamental to any kind of relationship.

Carl Rogers put forward the view that the relationship attitudes of genuineness (congruence), understanding (empathy) and acceptance (unconditional positive regard) provide the best environment for a person to grow and change, and the approach therefore relies heavily on the helper's/therapist's personality.

We feel that communicating such attitudes involves understanding and subscribing to the philosophy that underpins them, an ongoing commitment to self-awareness, and the development of self-acceptance, and these are fundamental aspects of our courses.

Counselling skills training

The Certificate in Person Centred Counselling Skills & Theory is ideal if you want to use counselling skills in an existing role or future employment, or have an interest in counselling and may wish to progress into training to become a Counsellor.

This comprehensive course consists of 35 sessions, at 6 hours each, and weekly attendance is required (during term-time). You will be expected to participate in a range of experiential activities, give and receive feedback, and complete the written and practical work.

You will explore and develop the attitudes and skills that are necessary for the Person Centred helping relationship, understand and work within professional and ethical guidelines, reflect on your practice sessions and your own learning process.

This course will enable you to use counselling skills in one-to one helping relationships, supported by an understanding of boundaries, ethics and counselling theory. It provides sound preparation for the Diploma in Person Centred Counselling.
