The Person Centred Approach
The Person Centred Approach was developed by Dr Carl Rogers, and it is one of the most widely used Humanistic approaches in counselling. It is based in a philosophy about people and human relationships, and we believe it is fundamental to any kind of relationship.
Rogers believed that a relationship firmly based in genuineness (congruence), understanding (empathy) and acceptance (unconditional positive regard) provides the best environment for a person to grow and change, and the approach therefore relies heavily on the helper's/therapist's personality.
Whilst some everyday relationships are based in such attitudes, the key difference is 'consistency' - the helper or therapist is committed to offering these attitudes on a consistent basis, as opposed to just some of the time, or to a few people.
Communicating such attitudes involves understanding the philosophy that underpins them, genuinely subscribing to them as a person (not just as a helper or therapist), and a commitment to developing self-awareness.
Training in the Person Centred Approach places a strong emphasis on developing self-awareness, increasing the ability to relate to others in a genuine, understanding and accepting way, and developing self-acceptance.
